Dynamic reliability of high-dimensional stochastic systems involving parametric uncertainties and nonstationary stochastic excitations

Abstract

Engineering structures and systems involving parametric uncertainties and nonstationary stochastic excitations are widely encountered in engineering fields. However, the response analysis and reliability evaluation of such systems in high dimension has been long time great challenges due to the coupling of nonlinearity and randomness. In the present lecture, a physically-driven probability density evolution method (PDEM) will be outlined. In particular, the dimension-reduced probability density evolution equation (DR-PDEE) has been established for high-dimensional nonlinear systems with or without parametric uncertainties, subjected to either additive or multiplicative excitations, being path-continuous or path-discontinuous. Besides, to quantifying the uncertainty of structural parameters full probabilistically, a new model for multi-variable random fields with between-variable nonlinear correlations was also developed and incorporated. The approach could then be applied to reliability evaluation of real-world large complex structures subjected to disastrous dynamic actions. Problems to be further studied will also be discussed.
